CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
The next morning, Rhys met his friends in the storage room of the servantsâ hall in the basement of the manor house. Theyâd begun meeting in the room ever since theyâd been found talking in the library one day by one of the guests. As usual, Rhys was the last to arrive.
âStill in the game?â Bell asked the moment Rhys strode through the door.
âYes, you?â he shot back, giving his friend a wide grin.
âIndeed,â Bell replied. âKendall is, too.â
Rhys glanced at the earl. Kendall didnât say a word. âWhatâs wrong with you?â
âDonât ask,â Clayton said, waving his hand. âThe poor chap was caught kissing Miss Wharton in the library earlier this morning.â
âThe devil, you say! Who found you?â Rhys asked, slapping his friend on the shoulder and laughing.
âWe were not caught kissing,â Kendall retorted, pulling his shoulder away. âWe were almost caught kissing by Miss Whartonâs ladyâs maid, Albina, and that is quite different.â
âOh, the ladyâs maid? Youâre fine then,â Rhys replied with another laugh.
âIâm glad you think so,â Kendall shot back, rolling his eyes.
âItâs the mother you have to worry about,â Rhys said with a wink.
âAgreed,â Clayton replied with a nod.
âSo, whatâs the news, chaps?â Rhys asked, rubbing his hands together. Ever since informing his friends that Lady Julianna had discovered him in the stables the first day of the house party, heâd yet to tell them he suspected she was trying to make him quit. He intended to mention Lady Julianna to them as little as possible.
âWell,â Clayton replied, âin addition to Baron Wharton and the Prince Regent joining our little group on Monday, apparently the Marquess of Murdock will be arriving as well.â
âMurdock?â Rhysâs head snapped up. âWhatâs he doing joining the party? I didnât know you were friendly with him, Clayton.â
âIâm not, particularly,â Clayton replied. âIt was the strangest thing. He wrote me a letter. Apparently, the man cannot bear to be away from the company of his betrothed for so long. Heâs coming here to see Lady Julianna.â
âReally?â Bell arched a brow. âThatâsâ¦odd.â
Rhys bit the inside of his cheek, but quickly ensured his normal devil-may-care smile appeared on his face. âHard to believe, given that heâs betrothed to Lady Julianna,â he said with a snort.
âThatâs not all,â Clayton continued, shaking his head. âApparently, heâs so enamored by her, heâs written to the Duke of Montlake asking him if they might move up the wedding date.â
âReally?â Bell drawled again, his eyes widening slightly.
âSounds like Murdock cannot wait for his wedding night,â Clayton continued with a chuckle.
Rhys clenched his jaw. Did Julianna know about this? She hadnât mentioned to him that her beloved Murdock was on the way. And she certainly hadnât mentioned that her wedding day had been moved up. But given the extent of their interactions in the stables, neither were exactly pieces of information he would expect her to be particularly forthcoming with.
Still, Rhys couldnât ignore the clench of his stomach when heâd heard that Murdock wanted the wedding date moved up. âDid Murdock mention a new date?â he heard himself asking.
